Senator Mardi Seng opened the joint election observation mission of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats and Liberal International for Taiwan's presidential election, at a welcome dinner in Taipei on 10 January 2024.
Observers from liberal and democratic parties across Asia and beyond joined the mission. Addressing them, Mardi Seng described Taiwan as a model for those who aspire to a democratic, secure and prosperous future — a point he has returned to in subsequent CALD engagements across the Indo-Pacific.
Election observation is one of CALD's longest-running activities. The Taipei-headquartered alliance, founded in Bangkok in 1993, is the only regional grouping of liberal and democratic political parties in Asia.
